Overview
A kitesurf and wingfoil safari through the Roussillon and Costa Brava regions offers one of the most dynamic and wind-reliable experiences in Europe, blending world-class riding conditions with the freedom of a catamaran lifestyle. Starting in Leucate–La Franqui, riders are welcomed by expansive sandy beaches and shallow lagoons stretching for kilometres, creating ideal training grounds alongside open Mediterranean waters for more advanced sessions. This legendary spot is powered by the Tramontane, a strong north-westerly wind, and the Marin, a smoother south-easterly breeze, delivering wind over 300 days a year and making it a global hotspot for freestyle, freeride, and progression. The energy of the area is amplified each April during the Mondial du Vent, when the world’s top kitesurfers and windsurfers gather to compete just offshore. Continuing south to Saint-Cyprien in the sun-soaked Pyrenees-Orientales, the landscape shifts where mountains meet the sea, offering consistent winds—up to 250 windy days annually—and a versatile playground for kitesurfing, wingfoiling, windsurfing, and even winter surfing or stand-up paddling during swell periods. Crossing into Spain, the bay of Rosas and Sant Pere Pescador reveals a seven-kilometre sandy coastline with safe, user-friendly conditions, no tides or currents, and reliable summer thermal winds of around 15 knots, complemented by stronger southerly winds in the shoulder seasons that can reach 25 knots. The flat to lightly choppy waters make it a freeride paradise, particularly suited to intermediate riders looking to progress in a relaxed and social environment. What truly elevates this journey is the catamaran safari format itself: the ability to follow the best wind each day, access uncrowded or remote spots, and seamlessly combine different wind systems and riding styles within a single trip. From glassy lagoon sessions to open-sea wave riding, each day offers variety and progression, all framed by the stunning Mediterranean coastline, vibrant beach culture, and the unique rhythm of life at sea—ride, sail, relax, and repeat.
